Have You Got What It Takes For Network Marketing Success?

by Melody Wigdahl, aka The Net Lady

Interested in MLM? Wonder what it takes to really make it work? Here's a checklist of some important qualities shared by the leaders in the industry:

1. Vision. This is more than just having a dream....this is having the strength and courage to believe in your dream....the willingness to make it a reality, and the ability to hang onto the vision even when it seems very far away

2. A burning desire to succeed. Successful networkers are like any successful entrepreneur - they know that success is not going to be easy but that doesn’t matter nearly as much as the end result - and that’s a better future for yourself and your loved ones.

3. A businesslike attitude. Most network marketing opportunities typically have low start-up costs. Unfortunately, this often translates into a weak commitment on the start-up marketer's part. Your start-up cost is only the tip of the iceberg - the real commitment is the emotional and physical one that you personally make to succeed. Prepare a written business plan -- and follow it. Review your plan at least once a month. When you treat your network marketing venture as a genuine business -- as opposed to something you do when you find a few spare minutes -- you'll succeed.

4. Do you believe in this product or service? Do you use it yourself? Are you happy and enthusiastic about the results you get with the product or service? In other words - can you be a walking, talking testimonial for the company? It is much easier to sell when you believe!

5. Are you looking for a paycheck next week - or an income for the next ten years? I don’t care what you may be told - there are no free rides to success in MLM, online or offline. Success in MLM, as in any type of business, takes time. Define the necessary steps and commit to doing them--even when you don't see tangible results right away. In fact, it is actually illegal for a company to make any claims regarding income or returns on your investment. Those grandiose claims to build your downline and get you thousands of dollars back in a week - are not just lies - they are illegal. Don't fall for them!

6. Self-discipline. Do what you plan to do. Set your schedule and your goals and then work them. Every check off the list is one step closer to success!

7. Share your plans with the significant people in your life. Your friends and family need to know that you are committed to making a change to your life. But - don’t be surprised if you are not greeted with elation over your plans - sometimes we make those around us uncomfortable when we break out of the“mold” to pursue our dreams - it reminds them of what they could be doing instead of what they are (or aren't!) doing. Don’t let it discourage you - you know what you want. Go for it.

8. Preparation is the key. It doesn’t matter what you did before - this is a new game with a different set of rules. Read everything you can. Know your product inside out, know who to contact to answer questions when you can't, memorize and personalize the company presentation. To succeed - you need to own the presentation, so that you aren’t “pitching” people - you are sharing your own story with them. It makes all the difference in the world - whether you are talking to a potential customer or a potential distributor (remember, they are really one and the same!) Study books on MLM, attend seminars offered by the parent company and spend time with your sponsors if possible (at least by phone & email).

9. Always be prepared for an opportunity to share your experience! Always have your cards with you, let me repeat that....ALWAYS HAVE YOUR CARDS WITH YOU!!! It doesn’t matter if you are in the line at the DMV, or the grocery store, and it doesn’t matter if you are in jeans or a suit - you never know when you just might get the perfect opening to share your story...and whip out that card!

10. A Positive Attitude. Surround yourself with positive, enthusiastic, motivated people. And this should also include some pure “down” time too - with no business oriented anything going on in the background. To stay positive- you also need to take a break, too, so don’t forget to play!

11. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your “upline” (or manager in the regular biz world) should be there to support you and help you. This is why they are getting an “override” (commission) on all sales that you make! Your upline should be there by phone or email or personal consultation, if possible, to train you, answer your questions, and just generally provide moral support when things get tough (trust me - they will!). Not getting the support you need? Don’t be afraid to find out who the next person upline is - and go to her with your questions & concerns. Not all people are cut out to be managers, and this applies in MLM as well as in corporate. Fortunately, in MLM you don’t get fired for going over your “boss’s” head!

12. Don’t be Obnoxious! Okay, there is just no nice way to put this - don’t ever become one of those horrible MLMer’s that scare small children and puppies and chase after little old ladies. I don’t care how wonderful your product and your opportunity is - it is not for everyone and it is not appropriate to recruit new distributors at your Great Aunt Bessie’s funeral. Learn to gracefully accept “no” as an answer. I promise you that as the nay sayers see you improve your life and lifestyle, the no will turn to curiosity, and then to interest....and then you will get your yes.

And if you follow these steps - it won’t take you that long to get the yes.

Next step.....picking out that company!
